A Term of Creativity at St. Paul’s Catholic Primary Art and Craft Club

This term at St. Paul’s Catholic Primary in Tilehurst, our after-school Art and Craft Club has been nothing short of extraordinary. The children have truly amazed us with their creativity, enthusiasm, and willingness to dive into every project with boundless energy. Their eagerness to explore different materials and techniques has resulted in some awesome masterpieces, making this term a truly inspiring one for both the students and the adults lucky enough to guide them.
Van Gogh Whales –
Creativity with Everyday Materials

One of the highlights of our term was our Van Gogh Whales project, where the children explored the use of everyday materials like cardboard, loo rolls, and glue. The idea behind this project was not only to introduce them to the works of the legendary Vincent van Gogh but also to show them that art can be created from the simplest of things.
Right from the start, every child jumped in with both hands (quite literally, with glue-covered fingers!) and fully embraced the challenge. Cutting, shaping, and assembling their whales with recycled materials, they each brought their unique touch to their creations. Some went for bold, swirling textures reminiscent of Van Gogh’s famous brushstrokes, while others focused on intricate details, making each whale a true one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
The joy and pride on their faces as they saw their whales take shape was priceless. It was a wonderful sight to see them experimenting, problem-solving, and truly engaging with the creative process. The finished pieces were spectacular, and the children should be incredibly proud of their work!

Beautiful Mother’s Day Flowers – A Heartfelt Touch

As this was a short term, we wanted to make sure we incorporated something meaningful, and what better way to do that than by creating beautiful Mother’s Day flowers? The children poured their hearts into these, making sure they were extra special for their loved ones.
Each child’s personality shone through in their chosen colours—some created delicate, soft pastel blooms, while others went for bright, bold colours bursting with vibrancy. The level of effort and care that went into these was incredible, with every petal and detail thoughtfully crafted. Watching them discuss their chosen ideas and help each other bring them to life was a true testament to their kindness and creativity.
I can only imagine how special their mums must have felt receiving such thoughtful, handmade gifts. It was a wonderful reminder of how art can be a powerful way to express love and appreciation.

Texture Easter Crafts – A Personalised Celebration

To round off our term, we embarked on a fun and tactile Easter craft that allowed the children to explore texture in a new way. Using my own recipe for texture paste and paint pens, they had the freedom to personalise their Easter-themed creations, making each one unique and full of character.
This activity was a hit! The children absolutely loved experimenting with different patterns, layering colours, and making their designs stand out. Some went for intricate details, while others embraced bold, sweeping strokes—each piece was as individual as the young artist who created it. It was wonderful to see their confidence growing as they realized that there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to create—just endless possibilities waiting to be explored.
A Brilliant Term Filled with Creativity and Joy
Reflecting on this term, one thing is clear: our Art and Craft Club is a space where creativity flourishes, and every child gets to shine. The energy, enthusiasm, and talent displayed by the children have made every session a joy to be part of.
I’ve seen them support each other, share ideas, and celebrate each other’s achievements. I’ve watched their confidence grow with each new creation. Most importantly, I’ve seen them take pride in their work, knowing that their art is valuable, meaningful, and truly special.
